This program should be governed by a team of multi-disciplined professionals who can ascertain and scrutinize the impact of changes being introduced into the healthcare production environment. What do we mean by \u201cchanges\u201d?\u00a0Anything being added, subtracted, or altered in the production IT environment is a change. The smallest faulty change to this environment can have a huge negative impact.\u00a0This is a big challenge since a medium-sized hospital can run hundreds of applications and maintain hundreds of servers and the cybersecurity infrastructure needed to support this environment.\u00a0What can go wrong?\u00a0For instance, a cybersecurity vendor updating their software on your network with a faulty update that touches all of your computing devices.\u00a0This scenario can bring your entire healthcare organization down.\u00a0 Changes to the environment, with such a broad reach and high risk, should be extensively scrutinized.<\/p><h2 id=\"ember158\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__heading-2\">Change Management Considerations<\/h2><ul><li>Have a change calendar for visibility for the entire organization<\/li><\/ul><ul><li>Communicate change activities to departments affected by awareness<\/li><\/ul><ul><li>Governance by a diverse team with a 360-degree view to scrutinize the impact<\/li><\/ul><ul><li>Only one change entered into the environment at a time<\/li><\/ul><ul><li>Testing plan with acceptance criteria for the change<\/li><\/ul><ul><li>Cybersecurity review of the change<\/li><\/ul><ul><li>Post-change monitoring of the environment for impact<\/li><\/ul><ul><li>Have an emergency change process<\/li><\/ul><ul><li>For Vendor changes, impose all of the above also<\/li><\/ul><h2 id=\"ember168\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__heading-2\">Vendor Management Discussion<\/h2><p id=\"ember169\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">Best practice would dictate taking control of your vendors and imposing cybersecurity and technical standards.\u00a0 Ideally, healthcare entities would author a document describing acceptable standards for vendors to meet in order to do business together.\u00a0 After all, you\u2019re putting their software into your critical, highly sensitive, government-regulated environment. Hospitals are not testing sites for software updates or unproven products.\u00a0 Typically, hospitals have rigorous change management programs internally, that scrutinize everything they are entering into their production IT environment.\u00a0 The same standards should be extended to vendors.<\/p><p id=\"ember170\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">Because hospitals are strapped for resources, it would be hard for hospitals to test every vendor&#8217;s update within their own environment.\u00a0 However, this is a fundamental breach of good quality practices with checks and balances.\u00a0 It\u2019s a cavalier trust of these major vendors. When entering into purchasing agreements with hardware\/software vendors, hospitals should be able to dictate a level of quality control that is entered into by the vendor.\u00a0 Testing and validation should be included, and proof of this should be provided by the vendor, PRIOR TO DEPLOYMENT OF UPDATES AND PATCHES to hospital infrastructure.\u00a0 Oftentimes, updates and patches are critical and meant to fix major vulnerabilities, hence the expedience.\u00a0 The challenge here is finding a balance between the immediacy of the fix and the quality.<\/p><h2 id=\"ember171\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__heading-2\">Vendor Management Considerations<\/h2><ul><li>Automate your vendor interactions with a risk management tool<\/li><\/ul><ul><li>Document criteria for doing business with vendors<\/li><\/ul><ul><li>Have rigorous standards, such as required testing plans<\/li><\/ul><ul><li>Insist your vendors test their products with other products in your environment<\/li><\/ul><ul><li>Setup your own in-house testing lab, use automated tools<\/li><\/ul><ul><li>Include critical vendors in your disaster recovery plan<\/li><\/ul><div class=\"reader-image-block reader-image-block--full-width\"><figure class=\"reader-image-block__figure\"><div class=\"ivm-image-view-model   \"><div class=\"ivm-view-attr__img-wrapper\n        \n        \"><img decoding=\"async\" id=\"ember179\" class=\"ivm-view-attr__img--centered  reader-image-block__img evi-image lazy-image ember-view\" src=\"https:\/\/media.licdn.com\/dms\/image\/D4E12AQGfyxUVRhZ9ew\/article-inline_image-shrink_1000_1488\/0\/1721676809092?e=1728518400&amp;v=beta&amp;t=p5P94rOZ8MzUKlh6GslT6YvPfHMP_QvnRIUhUv2-hMc\" alt=\"\" \/><\/div><\/div><figcaption class=\"reader-image-block__figure-image-caption display-block full-width text-body-small-open t-sans text-align-center t-black--light\">Paul J.
